A Canal Towpath and South Canal Street Stroll

Discover the Delaware Canal and one of its neighborhoods
Thursday, April 27 • 2 p.m.
Meet at the Old Library by Lake Afton
46 West Afton Avenue, Yardley,
Come with us as we stroll along the Delaware Canal towpath from Afton Avenue to Lock 5 and then head west to explore South Canal Street, a hidden Yardley Borough neighborhood.
With a boatyard, South Canal Street was a hub of activity while mules still pulled coal-laden boats along the canal. Later when the railroad bridge was built, many of the houses on the east side of the street were built for the workers.
A special stop on this tour will be the historic AME Church, which is being rescued by conservator Shirley Lee Corsey and volunteers. Now called the Gather Place, we will tour the interior to see the original church features and a new exhibit of old photos of Yardley.
Susan Taylor will lead this 2-mile roundtrip walk pointing out sites and sharing stories along the way.
A donation of $10 per person is requested for the tour. To reserve your spot, please e-mail info@yardleyhistory.org or call 215-208-1154.
